Privacy Policy

Who this is

SupperMate is a household meal planner built and operated by Erfkern, a New Zealand sole trader (NZBN 9429053534934) run by Tom Oosterlinck, based in Hamilton, New Zealand. This policy explains what SupperMate collects, why, and where it goes.

Anyone can create a SupperMate account. Creating one starts a new household with you as its admin.

What we collect

To run a household's meal planning, SupperMate holds:

We do not collect payment details. SupperMate has no subscription or in-app purchase at this stage.

We do not connect to Apple Health or Google Fit, and never will while a connection would mean sending health data off our own server, which the rule below rules out.

When you sign in, we set a single session cookie so the app knows it's you. It is marked httpOnly, meaning no script running in your browser (ours or anyone else's) can ever read it — only your browser and our server ever see it. It carries no personal information itself, only a signed reference to your session, and it's cleared when you log out.

Children

If you add a child to your household, SupperMate only ever holds an age group for them, for example "5 to 8". We never ask for or store a child's name, date of birth, or any calorie or weight figure for them. A child never has their own login, and the app never shows a child a calorie number, by design, not by setting.

Where it's kept

SupperMate's database runs on a server we operate ourselves in Nuremberg, Germany. It is not a shared cloud database run by a large technology company, it is a single machine we administer directly, and it is not reachable from the public internet except through the app itself over an encrypted connection.

Who else touches it

A small number of specialist services help run SupperMate. None of them see more than they need to do their one job:

Some of these are outside New Zealand. We've deliberately picked providers that receive only the minimum needed for their one job, and none of them are permitted to sell or reuse your data. Your actual meal and health data stays on our own server in Germany at all times, only a stripped, non-identifying subset ever reaches the AI provider above.

How long we keep it, and your rights

We keep your information for as long as your household uses SupperMate. You can ask us to see what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it entirely, at any time, by emailing [email protected]. If you're the only adult in your household, deleting your account means closing the whole household out rather than just your own login, since someone needs to remain responsible for it — email us and we'll sort that out with you directly. If you're in New Zealand and unhappy with how we've handled a request, you also have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

If you're in the European Union, the EEA, or the United Kingdom, you have equivalent rights under the GDPR or UK GDPR — to access, correct, or delete your data, and to complain to your own country's data protection authority. The same contact below handles those requests too; we're a small operation without a dedicated EU representative, but we take a request from anywhere just as seriously.

Not medical advice

Calorie targets, portion suggestions, and macro figures in SupperMate are general information based on standard formulas and published food composition data. They are not personalised medical or dietary advice. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or are planning for a child, please talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before using any calorie or weight target the app suggests.

Dietary tags and nutrition figures

Tags like "dairy-free" or "gluten-free" are worked out from the ingredients recorded against a recipe, on a best-effort basis. They are not checked against the packaging, cross-contamination risk, or manufacturing process of the specific products you actually buy. If you or someone you cook for has a serious allergy or coeliac disease, always check the real ingredients and packaging yourself, a tag in this app is a helpful pointer, not a guarantee.

Calorie and nutrient figures are drawn from published New Zealand, Australian, and UK food composition tables. They are estimates for a typical version of that food, and will differ from the specific brand or product on your shelf.

Security

All traffic to SupperMate is encrypted. The database itself only accepts connections from the server it runs on, never directly from the internet, and is backed up daily, with each backup kept for 7 days before it's replaced. If you delete your data, it can take up to 7 days to age out of every backup, even though it's removed from the live database immediately.

If something ever goes wrong and your information is exposed in a way the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 calls a notifiable privacy breach, we'll tell you directly and notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, as the law requires, rather than let you find out some other way.

Changes to this policy

If anything material changes, particularly what we collect or who we share it with, we'll update the date at the top of this page and tell you directly rather than expect you to check back.
